The O-ring, although much superior to previous seals in practice, soon showed its limitations in dynamic sealing (reciprocating motion), which led to the development of seals that had sectional shapes and were grooved to prevent their movement.
On the other hand, the change of traditional hydraulic media from water to industrial oil and other more viscous and better lubricated media has led to the further development of sealing materials and their cross section geometry.
